L'ancien dictateur du Suriname, Desi Bouterse est de retour pour les élections législatives, même s'il est en procès pour assassinat.
Bouterse, 64 ans, président du Parti National Démocrate (PND) fait partie du bloc de quatre organisations politiques "Mega Combinatie" (MC) et mène la majorité des sondages d'opinion effectués dans plusieurs districts.
"MC" serait en tête avec 41% des voix selon les sondages d'opinion faits dans la capitale Paramaribo sur 315 électeurs, publié la semaine dernière par la Fondation scientifique de l'information (SWI).
Le suivant est le parti au gouvernement, le Nieuw Front (NF) avec 22,5%, dirigé par le président Ronald Venetiaan, 73 ans, qui a dit qu'il ne briguerait pas la présidence de nouveau.
En 2009, Bouterse a déclaré qu'il chercherait la présidence si son parti remportait assez de sièges.
Répondant aux questions du public lors d'une émission de radio en direct sur Radio 10 samedi dernier, Bouterse a dit qu'il était prêt à travailler avec tous les partis. "Nous ne pouvons pas le faire seuls, mais nous devons travailler ensemble", at-il dit.
Venetiaan estime que le "NF" ne travaillera pas avec le "MC", puisque Bouterse a perpétré un coup d'état et qu'il est actuellement en procès pour assassinat.
Huit alliances politiques et quatre partis participent aux élections législatives de ce 25 mai. Quelques 325.000 électeurs vont élire 51 parlementaires, 116 représentants régionaux et 752 représentants municipaux pour les cinq prochaines années.
Bouterse, qui a perpétré deux coups d'état, a été condamné à 11 ans de prison par le tribunal néerlandais en 1999 et fait l'objet d'un mandat d'arrestation d'Interpol.
Il est actuellement en procès comme le principal suspect devant la cour martiale pour l'assassinat de 15 opposants politiques en 1982. Le procès reprend le 6 Juin. S'il est reconnu coupable, il pourrait faire face à une peine de prison de 20 ans.
Sa candidature à la présidence est largement perçue comme un geste pour éviter l'emprisonnement, en accordant une amnistie à tous ceux qui sont impliqués dans les meurtres des année 80.

PARAMARIBO, Suriname (AFP) - Suriname's former dictator Desi Bouterse is set to make a comeback in parliamentary elections in the South American nation on Tuesday, even as he is on trial for murder.

Bouterse, 64, and chairman of the National Democratic Party (NDP) is part of the four-member political bloc 'Mega Combination' (MC) and leads the majority of the opinion polls held in several districts in this former Dutch colony.
MC leads with 41 percent according to opinion polls held in the capital Paramaribo among 315 voters, published last week by Foundation Scientific Information (SWI).
Next in line is ruling government Nieuw Front (NF) with 22.5 percent led by president Ronald Venetiaan, 73, who has said he would not seek the presidency again.
In 2009, Bouterse said he would seek the presidency if his party gains enough seats.
Addressing questions from the public in a live radio show at Radio 10 on Saturday, Bouterse said he was willing to work with all parties. "We can't do it alone, but have to work together," he said.
Venetiaan believes that NF will not work with MC, as Bouterse staged a coup and is currently on trial for murder.
Eight political alliances and four individual parties participate in the May-25 parliamentary elections. Some 325,000 voters will elect 51 parliamentarians, 116 regional and 752 municipal representatives for the next five years.
Bouterse, a two-time coup stager, was sentenced to 11 years in jail by the Dutch court in 1999 and has an Interpol warrant out for his arrest.
He currently faces trial as the main suspect a court-martial for the 1982 killings of 15 political opponents. The trial resumes June 6. If convicted he could face prison time of 20 years.
His bid for the presidency is widely seen as a move to avoid imprisonment, by granting amnesty to all those involved in the 1980s killings.
