IMF pleased with Suriname economy

PARAMARIBO–International Monetary Fund (IMF) says economic activity remains buoyant in Suriname and that the country will most likely record growth of more than four per cent this year.

An IMF mission has just ended a two-week visit to the country. The mission has reported that official figures dating back to 2007 indicate that nominal gross domestic product in 2010 was about 20 per cent higher than previously assessed.

It says the new data suggest that after slowing to three per cent in 2009, economic growth accelerated in 2010 to just over four per cent. As a result, the Washington-based financial institution says the near-term outlook for the Surinamese economy is favourable.
